Off-road driving can take multiple forms, from riding trails
at the weekend to climbing over rocky terrain. For many, driving off the beaten
path is fun and unpredictable. While it might seem as relatively straightforward
as taking a 4x4 and driving it out on an off-road trail, it takes preparation
and knowledge to do so safely. Additionally, the terrain can be challenging to

off-roading. During the monsoon season, flooding is a possibility, so it’s best
to learn how to navigate in muddy terrain. The locals are warm and friendly, a
positive aspect that may make the trip even more interesting.
Iceland
Iceland’s weather revolves around the extremes; below zero
temperatures in the winter, with mid-range temperatures during the warmer
seasons. However, it also happens to be a naturally beautiful country, one with
an assortment of physical features that make off-road driving a true pleasure.
From rugged terrain to green valleys and deep ravines, there’s a little bit of
everything that makes the driving experience a memorable one.
While the country’s population is low, the locals have an
affinity for off-road driving, demonstrated by the existence of an extreme
formula driving course where motorsports competitions are held. It’s not a
course for the timid, as drivers might perform dare-devil antics to quench
their passion for extreme driving.
Sahara Desert,
Africa
Its topography and extremely high temperatures make the
Sahara Desert a prime off-road driving location. With much of the desert
inhospitable, there are multiple locations that can provide exciting
adventures. Events such as the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles, a women-only event that
has teams race each other across the desert landscape, are among those off-road
enthusiasts look forward to.
The United States
Two locations in the United States stand out for their
off-roading experience: Utah and West Virginia. The former has a region in its
south-eastern region called Moab that has long been considered the go-to place
for outdoor adventures. The trails there are suitable for mountain bikers, with
a sandstone landscape in a desert setting that is bound to attract off-roaders.
West Virginia, on the other hand, offers the Hatfield-McCoy
Trail System, a continually growing project that encompasses hundreds of miles of
trails. These trails are open all year long to a range of off-road vehicles,
including dirt bikes, utility vehicles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). For
everyone from beginners to experienced drivers (and riders), these trails offer
the perfect platform to test their skills.
