Off-Roading During Winter

Many people use the winter season to hunker down and put a pause on outdoor activity. However, for off-road enthusiasts, exploring the outdoors continues even in the cold weather, as multiple trails are open during the winter season. Customising a four-wheel-drive vehicle for the winter terrain is necessary, as is having all the equipment needed for an off-road adventure.

Razi Salih, an extreme sports enthusiast who has driven his Jeep in many challenging locations, is among a group of off-roaders who don’t mind driving in the winter

Some of the spots off-roaders frequent during this season include:

Paiute Trail, Utah

Considered one of the top trails in the United States, the Paiute Trail is a loop that measures 275 miles long and has more than 1,000 miles of marked side trails. While much of the trail is accessible with an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), 4x4s can also pass along a large number of routes.

The trail’s appeal to off-roaders is that it is suited for family-type riding, thanks to the forest scenery that lines the route. Panoramic views across various ridges allow riders to see miles of distance, making the Paiute a popular trail with photographers. Fishing and camping activities are also common among off-roaders looking to make the most of their outing.

Black Hills National Forest, South Dakota

At Black Hills National Forest, off-roaders will find hundreds of maintained and marked trails for their enjoyment. Motorised vehicles, including 4x4s and snowmobiles, are allowed on the trails, which can have as much as five feet of snow during the winter. Along the way, there are warming shelters and gas stops to provide guidance and supplies where necessary.

Drummond Island, Michigan

Drummond Island is the largest closed-loop trail system in Michigan, with more than 60 miles of trails suitable for ATVs and 40 miles for off-road vehicles. An abundance of deep-wood challenges means that drivers of all skill levels will be tested, even as they take in picturesque scenery along the way. There’s wildlife to keep an eye out for too, while snow level changemake it crucial to bring recovery and tow gear.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

Where many winter trails are considered family-friendly, the White Mountains trails are built for expert off-roaders, who must have all the essential items (and heavy equipment tyres fitted) to conquer themDense fog, sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow await off-roaders who feel they are up for the challenge
